PLA Navy fleet visits Hong Kong again, residents heartened by nation's strength
On the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the Ministry of National Defense announced that a Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy fleet, consisting of the guided-missile destroyer CNS Nanning and the guided-missile frigate CNS Hengyang, will visit Hong Kong from July 2 to 6. The fleet will host open-house events for the public to board the ships and organize a series of cultural exchange activities. This highly anticipated "rendezvous in Hong Kong" not only reflects the central government's special care and trust for Hong Kong compatriots, but also provides a direct opportunity for the general public in Hong Kong to understand the country's formidable military strength and comprehensive national power.
Since Hong Kong's return, the PLA Navy vessels have visited Hong Kong ten times, unfolding a condensed tapestry of a country growing strong with a powerful military. In 2001, the Shenzhen and the Fengcang made their maiden visit to Hong Kong, where thousands of residents lined up at the Ngong Shuen Chau Naval Base, eager to catch a glimpse of the warships' majestic presence. In 2017, marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return, the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation rode the waves to Hong Kong, where hundreds of officers and soldiers lined up on the deck to spell out "Hello Hong Kong" to greet the residents—a touching scene that remains engraved in the hearts of many Hong Kong people today. In recent years, visits by naval flotillas have become increasingly regularized. In 2024, the Hainan and the Changsha were opened for public visits, with over 10000 residents boarding the ships to experience these pillars of the nation. Last year, the Shandong aircraft carrier formation arrived in Hong Kong, brin ging a powerful sense of reassurance that "with national security, our homes will prosper". The consecutive appearances of the dual aircraft carriers in Hong Kong have allowed local residents to witness the historic leap of the People's Navy from offshore waters defense to open seas protection.
From naval fleets and escort flotillas to aircraft carrier formations, the most advanced domestically developed warships have repeatedly berthed in Victoria Harbour. The high specification and the complete variety of ship types are unprecedented anywhere else in the world. The scale of openness and level of transparency are also unique globally, making every visit of these warships a highly anticipated festival for military enthusiasts across the country. This fully demonstrates the central government's special care for Hong Kong and high trust in Hong Kong citizens, while embodying how Hong Kong's destiny is closely intertwined with that of the motherland, allowing Hong Kong to share the glory and security of a prosperous and strong nation.
Amidst the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return—and particularly against the backdrop of the accelerating changes unseen in a century and a volatile international situation—the visit of the CNS Nanning and CNS Hengyang flotilla and their accompanying activities serve as a grand gift from the central government to Hong Kong, carrying profound significance and value in multiple dimensions.
First, it is a solemn declaration of safeguarding sovereignty and security. Warships are mobile territories. The presence of the PLA's main warships in Hong Kong waters demonstrates to the international community that the PLA performs its defense duties in Hong Kong in accordance with the law, serving as a solid pillar for maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. It demonstrates China's firm determination and robust capability to ensure the steady and sustained implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle, resist all internal and external interference or sabotage, and firmly defend the baseline of Hong Kong's long-term peace and stability.
Second, it serves as a vivid and intuitive education in national defense and patriotism. Both the CNS Nanning and the CNS Hengyang, which are visiting Hong Kong this time, possess extensive experience in ocean escorts and evacuation operations. Several years ago, during the political turmoil in Sudan, the CNS Nanning rushed to the scene upon receiving orders, sailing thousands of miles to execute an evacuation mission. It safely evacuated 1171 Chinese and foreign nationals, including two Hong Kong residents, honoring the pledge that "the People's Navy is for the people" through practical actions. Citizens joining the guided tours, especially young students, can witness firsthand the glorious achievements of these warships in escorting and evacuation missions. This shatters the malicious lies and smears propagated by Western media, allowing residents to truly feel that "the motherland is Hong Kong's strongest backing" is not a mere slogan, but the ultimate reliance in times of peril.
Furthermore, military openness and transparency showcase the confidence of a major country and convey the philosophy of peaceful development. The open-house events of the naval flotilla in Hong Kong are by no means a show of force. Instead, they leverage Hong Kong's advantages as an international metropolis and an open window to present the PLA's open, transparent, and confident image to the world. The footprints of the People's Navy in escort missions, peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, and overseas evacuations span the globe, proving that it remains a righteous force for maintaining the security of international sea lanes and promoting regional peace.
A strong nation requires a powerful military, and only with national security can Hong Kong enjoy stability. The return of the PLA Navy flotilla to Hong Kong is not only a highly anticipated display of the nation's heavy weight equipment, but also an opportunity for national defense education and a rallying of strength across the entire Hong Kong society.
